Spain to create environmental law watchdog

Spain is to set up an independent commission to monitor the implementation and impacts of environmental legislation, environment minister Cristina Narbona announced on Monday. The commission will also make predictions of future trends to guide future policy, thus "replicating the systems of European systems like the European environment agency", added Domingo Jiménez Beltrán, ex-director of the EU agency and a leading candidate to head the new commission. The commission is due to start reporting from next March. It will be publicly financed through a foundation to secure its independence. See Spanish environment ministry.
