Sweden pursues case against paraquat
The Swedish government is proceeding with an unprecedented attempt to have the European court of justice overturn an EU decision to reauthorise use of the herbicide paraquat, Dagens Nyheter newspaper reports (EED 05/02/04). Sweden's argument hinges on the precautionary principle, which it aims to have tested in court, a foreign office spokesman told the newspaper. Sweden will contend that the compound is a potential hazard not only to the environment but also to those who use it, and that the European Commission is therefore "obliged" to ban it. See article.
