New spurt in French environmental spending
Growth in French environmental spending accelerated in 2002 after a slow-down in recent years, according to a briefing paper issued by the French environment institute (Ifen) (EED 04/08/03). Expenditure rose by 5% in 2002, it reported, with the total reaching €28.8bn, or 1.9% of GDP. Environment-related employment also continued to grow, reaching 316,700, or 1.3% of all employment. Unusually compared with previous years, the large majority of new eco-jobs were created in the private rather than the public sector. See press release and briefing paper.
