Chemical pollution "harming Arctic wildlife"
Man-made chemicals are damaging the immune systems of polar bears, according to three new studies, environmental group WWF reported. Low-level contamination of the Arctic with chemicals such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and pesticides is already known (EED 01/10/02). The new studies go further to report a link between levels of these two groups and numbers of infection-fighting antibodies in polar bears. WWF said the results showed again the need for immediate phase-out of the most hazardous chemicals. See press release.
