Greens and regions urge EU coexistence laws
Europe needs legally binding regulations on the coexistence of GM and non-GM crops, according to the Assembly of European regions and Friends of the Earth Europe. Last year the European Commission issued voluntary guidance on coexistence (EED 24/07/03). But the groups say this should be replaced by firm legislation based on that adopted by Germany this year (EED 13/01/04). This would include liability rules and "biosafety measures" establishing buffer zones between biotech and conventional crops. They also say EU regions should have the legal right to declare themselves totally or partially GM free. See press release.
