WWF urges stronger curbs on illegal logging
Environmental group WWF has criticised EU efforts to curb illegal logging and reiterated its demand for the practice to be made a criminal offence. The European Commission is "ignoring the issue", the group said on Thursday. It rated the performance of 19 EU member countries on the issue as generally poor, but claimed that 16 were now ready to outlaw illegal logging Europe-wide. The group also claimed "clear support" for an EU initiative to tackle illegal logging in the bloc's new member states. See press release and evaluation of national policies.
