Governments back EU limits on PAH in food
EU governments have approved limits on levels of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in vegetable oils and other foods. The decision by a committee of member state representatives was welcomed by EU health commissioner David Byrne. Environmental pollution - for example from traffic, industry and oil spills - is an important source of contamination. However, processing techniques such as smoking and drying tend to produce much higher levels of PAH in particular foods. See press release.
