France rejects EU emission trade demand
France has rejected European Commission demands that it slash the number of allowances it intends to distribute under the EU CO2 emission trading scheme (EED 20/10/04). The French environment ministry said this would impose a "heavy burden on certain sectors compared with the treatment they have received in other, often less well-documented European plans". It added that the figure its emission growth projection - challenged by the Commission - was well below that used by the UK, Ireland and Austria. See press release.
