Germany "ready for waste landfilling ban"
The German government has insisted that that a national ban on landfilling untreated household waste will take effect next June, as scheduled. In answer to a parliamentary question it said that there was now sufficient pre-treatment capacity: comprising 132 incineration and mechanical-biological treatment (MBT) plants. Seventy-two of these plants - most of them MBT - have been built since 2001, when the government raised the future limit on permitted organic content of landfilled waste to 18% specifically to enable continued use of MBT (EED 31/01/01).
