Norway wrestles with "hidden" cost of waste
Norwegian waste management companies have expressed concern that the prices of many products do not reflect the costs of disposing of them, Bergens Tidende newspaper reports. Although consumers pay a surcharge on many household appliances to fund collection and recovery, the costs tend to be "hidden in the tax system", according to delegates to an industry conference. On the other hand, a virtual monopoly on collection and recycling by industry-owned companies costs an unnecessarily high NKr1.1bn (€135m) annually, a competition authority spokesman told the newspaper.
