UK car industry's green impacts laid bare
The environmental and resource impacts of Britain's motor industry have been quantified for the first time in a mass-balance study. It found that car, truck and bus production and use consumed 7m tonnes of resources and produced a similar amount of waste. Air emissions totalled 122m tonnes - almost a quarter of the UK's releases of the pollutants involved. Meanwhile, 41m tonnes of oil-equivalent was consumed, with 96% of all energy consumption accounted for by vehicle use. The study did not examine impacts outside the UK.
