EU-15 "could be totally renewable by 2050"
The EU-15 states could shift completely to renewable energy by 2050, so eliminating fossil greenhouse gas emissions, according to pro-renewables NGO Inforse-Europe. Key to the group's vision is a massive, sustained improvement in energy efficiency, combined with little or no demand growth, leading to a four-fifths reduction in overall energy demand by 2050. The NGO calculates how renewable energies could be boosted to supply all this energy demand by then. The EU-15 are currently not on track to hit an existing 2010 target of a 12% renewables share (EED 26/05/04). See press release.
