Latvian to become EU energy policy chief
EU energy commissioner-designate Andris Piebalgs looks certain to be confirmed in post after impressing MEPs at a three-hour hearing in Strasbourg on Monday (EED 05/11/04). The Latvian Mr Piebalgs stressed the need to integrate environmental objectives into EU energy policy and peppered his performance with supportive references to renewables, biofuels and energy efficiency. The large centre-right EPP group, called his appearance "satisfying", the Socialists "competent", the Greens "well-prepared". All endorsed him.
