"Last" renewal for rolling EU phthalates ban
An emergency EU ban on phthalates in toys designed for sucking by under threes has been renewed for the 19th, and almost certainly last, time. Five years on from the measure's introduction, member states agreed a more wide-ranging permanent ban in September (EED 24/09/04). The European parliament is expected to give its backing to this. To give time for the new law to be finalised, emergency prohibition has been prolonged by ten months, from 20 November to 20 September next year. The text of the law was published in the EU official journal on Saturday. See phthalates decision.
