UK announces mercury curbs for crematoria
Mercury emissions from British crematoria are to be restricted for the first time under rules announced by the UK environment ministry on Monday. After consulting in 2003 the government is to require that all new crematoria must install mercury abatement by December 2012 (EED 09/05/03). Existing plants will have abate mercury for at least half of cremations by the same deadline. A simple mercury emission trading system will enable flexible implementation. An EU mercury strategy is due imminently. See UK environment ministry press release, the crematoria guidance, and EU mercury strategy pages.
