Belgian environmentalists tackle energy issues

A coalition of Belgian environment groups have attacked energy ministry plans to cut sales tax (VAT) on electricity from 21% to 6%. The move would be "particularly inappropriate" since Belgian energy efficiency levels are well below the EU average, they said. In a separate statement, NGOs criticised energy scenarios produced by the national electricity and gas regulator suggesting that cutting energy consumption could curb greenhouse emissions more effectively than an already agreed plan to phase out nuclear power.
