Portuguese government halts Lisbon motorway EIA

The Portuguese government has scrapped an environmental impact assessment (EIA) on the controversial Marquês tunnel motorway approach into Lisbon, it was revealed this week. Opponents are claiming the decision was prompted by fears of a negative assessment and is a clear breach of the EU's EIA directive. But the government has justified the move - taken days before a general election - by arguing that a decision in favour of the project from the Supreme administrative court made an assessment redundant. Environmental NGO Quercus described the decision as "an assault on citizens' rights". See Quercus press release.
