EU states tackled over nitrates, fuel quality

A European court of justice advisor has recommended that Belgium be condemned for comprehensively failing to comply with the EU's nitrates directive. Among other criticisms in an opinion released on Thursday, advocate-general Leendert Geelhoed says Belgian nitrate action plans are inadequate and points to gaps in its application of good agricultural practice. Also on Thursday, Austria was condemned by the court for failing to provide an implementation report due under a 1999 auto/oil directive limiting the sulphur content of certain liquid fuels.
