Water expert Portugal's new environment minister
Portugal's new socialist prime minister Jose Socrates has named university professor Francisco Nunes Correia to head an enlarged ministry of environment, land use planning and regional development. He will face an immediate challenge implementing improvements to water treatment and tackling Portugal's critical water shortage. Other priority areas will be climate change and waste, where decisions over hazardous waste treatment remain unresolved. See Portuguese environment ministry.
