Commission proposes EU civil protection boost

Member states called for improvements in January, following the Indian Ocean tsunami. The existing framework was last strengthened in 2001 (EED 31/05/00). The mechanism can and has been mobilised both within the EU and in third countries. See press release, memorandum, and the communication (COM(2005)137).
