Governments take stock on sustainability agenda

Ministers from over 100 countries participated in the latest session of the UN commission on sustainable development (CSD), which ended in the early hours of Saturday. It was the CSD's first policy setting session since the 2002 Johannesburg sustainability summit (EED 05/09/02). It produced guidelines on achieving international goals for water, sanitation and human settlements. EU environment commissioner Stavros Dimas introduced the bloc's water initiative, describing it as "emblematic" of Europe's commitment to increase the efficiency of its external action.
