South-East Europe safer mining strategy agreed

A strategy to enhance environmental safety of operating and abandoned mines in the Balkan region and the Tisza river basin has been agreed at a UN-sponsored meeting of government officials and experts that ended on Saturday. The strategy includes further assessments of high-risk sites and a framework for releasing funds to clean up old mines, smelters and processing facilities. It sets higher health and environmental standards for new mines and should speed up introduction of early warning systems of major pollution of the region's rivers. See Unep press release, and conference details.
