Dutch, Belgian green transport aid approved

The European Commission has approved a €20m Dutch state aid package to cut nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from commercial barges and the like. The money will be available over five years to Dutch-registered inland waterways vessels using low emission diesel engines. The Commission has also cleared €90m of Belgian state aid to promote rail over road transport of goods. The money should offset external costs of road transport, such as greenhouse gas emissions, and increase Belgian rail traffic by 20% over the next three years.
