Ireland issues Weee implementation rules

Irish environment minister Dick Roche on Wednesday published three regulations transposing the EU's Weee directive on electroscrap into national law. The rules introduce producer responsibility for Weee from 13 August, as required by the directive. However, deadlines for collection and recycling targets are being deferred by two years to 31 December 2008. A consultation launched in April had brought some "excellent suggestions", which had helped streamline and improve the rules, Mr Roche said. Irish retailers warned of "major challenges" ahead.
