Biotech "key to growth and environment"

The European Commission is to study how biotechnology can boost EU competitiveness, it has announced in a report on the EU's life sciences and biotechnology strategy. The sector "could contribute greatly to increasing Europe's share of the global high tech market [and] improve our quality of life through... a better environment", the report says. Meanwhile science commissioner Janez Potocnik welcomed the publication of an EU plant sciences research agenda. It showed "plant genomics and biotechnology... will play a major role in ensuring the sustainability of our economy", he said. See report and research agenda.
