EU sustainable energy publicity drive launched

A four-year, €3.7m campaign to raise European public awareness on sustainable energy was launched by the European Commission on Monday. In a sign of the times, EU energy commissioner Andris Piebalgs described its aims entirely in terms of boosting growth and competitiveness. Among a series of "achievable benchmarks" for 2008 are: construction of 15,000 MW of new wind power capacity and 450 new biomass combined heat and power plants, fivefold and threefold increases respectively in production of bioethanol and biodiesel, and construction of 50,000 "very low" energy houses.
