EU urged to advance green consumption agenda
Some 250 scientists have called on the European Commission to create a specific EU funding stream for research on sustainable consumption. They criticised a "severe implementation gap" in efforts to follow-up world-wide agreement in 2002 on a ten-year framework of sustainable consumption and production (SCP). EU research remains focused on technology development, the scientists complain. They maintain that a greater focus on SCP would also support the EU's efforts to become more competitive. The scientists are signatories of a declaration on sustainable consumption adopted in Oslo in February. See letter and declaration.
