Belgium condemned over nitrate pollution
The European court of justice has condemned the Belgian government for breaches of the EU's 1991 on farm nitrate pollution in its Wallonia and Flanders regions. The case goes back to a series of complaints levelled by the European Commission in the late 1990s. These included failure to identify waters affected by pollution and incomplete designation of vulnerable zones. There were also gaps in action programmes to reduce pollution and deficiencies in the Flemish code of good agricultural practice. See judgement in case C-221/03.
