Germany to stop sucking in hazardous waste

Germany's environment agency has predicted that, after years of dramatic increases, imports of controlled wastes will decline sharply from this June when a national ban on landfilling untreated waste took effect (EED 02/06/05). The agency's latest annual report on waste trade shows that imports shot up by 33% in 2004 alone to reach 6.5m tonnes. Much of the waste came from Italy, Austria and the Netherlands. Imports should now be falling, it said because German incinerators are running at full capacity while many landfills have been forced to close. See press release.
