Extension of road tolling on Germany's agenda

Proposals to extend road tolls designed to counter congestion and emissions have been on the agenda in Germany this week. At their latest twice-yearly meeting on Wednesday, state transport ministers adopted a resolution. In this they voted by a narrow 7-6 margin against extending to cars an existing toll on lorries using motorways. One day before the meeting, outgoing federal transport minister Manfred Stolpe opposed the move in a newspaper interview. But Mr Stolpe also expressed an intention to increase existing lorry tolls for more polluting vehicles. See transport ministers.
