German court backs can deposits yet again

The Berlin high court has again upheld the legality of the government's deposits on one-way drinks containers, throwing out a challenge brought by three food retailers. The firms argued that the current "island" system for deposit clearing violated EU rules on the free movement of goods, citing a recent European court of justice ruling (EED 14/12/04). The court disagreed. Outgoing environment minister Jürgen Trittin, who championed the deposits system to support the market share of refillable containers, welcomed the verdict.
