UK raises its game on transport biofuels

Britain will aim to achieve a 5% share for biofuels in transport by 2010, the government announced on Thursday. The move will mean a dramatic increase in UK biofuels consumption and reduce CO2 emissions by 1m tonnes per year, the government estimates. The target is virtually in line with an EU-wide goal set in the 2003 biofuels directive. This summer the European commission asked the UK to explain why it had so far only managed a 0.3% share compared with the directive's 2005 indicative target of 2% (EED 07/07/05). See press release.
