Brussels planning EU-wide tax to cut plastics use

The European Commission is planning to introduce an EU-wide plastics tax to reduce pollution and boost revenues, budget commissioner Günther Oettinger said on Wednesday

The European Commission is planning to introduce an EU-wide plastics tax to reduce pollution and boost revenues, budget commissioner Günther Oettinger said on Wednesday after initial discussions on post-2020 financial planning.

“What we wish to do is reduce the total volume of plastic in the environment,” Oettinger told reporters in Brussels. With China having closed its doors to imports of plastics waste this year, Europe can no longer count on exporting the problem, he said.
