EU shelves plans for legal guidance on ‘new’ GMOs

The European Commission has put on ice plans to issue legal guidance on whether the products of new plant breeding techniques should be subject to regulation as genetically modified organisms

The European Commission has put on ice plans to issue legal guidance on whether the products of new plant breeding techniques should be subject to regulation as genetically modified organisms, an official told ENDS on Monday, just days before the EU Court of Justice is due to issue guidance in a related case.

“No guidelines are planned any more. We are waiting for the ruling of the ECJ then we will reflect on the way forward,” an official at the EU executive’s health and food safety directorate said.
