Restrictions on cruise ships’ emissions are being fast-tracked in Iceland after high concentrations of ultrafine particles and black carbon were detected in Reykjavik last week.
Scientists took samples following a request from NGOs belonging to the Clean Arctic Alliance. Cruise ships typically change over from low-sulphur oil to heavy fuel oil when leaving one of the Emission Control Areas (ECAs) as designated under Annex 6 of the Marpol Convention for the prevention of pollution from ships.
