The UK government could create an environmental commission to replace the functions of the European Commission after the country leaves the EU in 2019.

Conservative party environment secretary Michael Gove made the suggestion, which he said would be a matter for consultation, while giving evidence to legislators last week.

Gove told the House of Lords EU Energy and Environment Sub-Committee the EU had created many good pieces of environmental law and rejected concerns that Brexit would spark “a race to the bottom”.
