Extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes should be strengthened across Europe to ensure packaging manufacturers shoulder responsibility for plastic pollution, a new think tank report argues.

EPR schemes are already used in all but two of the EU member states, but they vary widely in the types of packaging covered, whether household or industrial, and the fees manufacturers have to pay for each tonne of material produced, the report from the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) shows.
