Norwegian public goes less green

Opinion poll finds far fewer consumers willing to accept higher prices for the environment

Since 1989, the proportion of Norwegian consumers willing to give up goods or services in order to protect the environment has fallen dramatically from 50 to 20%, according to a new public opinion poll. The survey, by MMI, also found that only 19% would now accept higher electricity prices in order to reduce consumption, compared with 45% ten years ago.

"Environmental issues have become less important to us", John Spilling of MMI told Bergens Tidende newspaper. "It's a totally unambiguous trend. In some areas this could have something to do with problems that have become less serious since 1989, such as acidification. However, neither do Norwegians seem very concerned over climate changes or threats to the ozone layer."

The survey results confirm similar findings released last year by Norway's national institute for consumer research (ENDS Daily 23 July 1999).
