New edition of EU environment guide out

EU Committee of American chamber of commerce publishes eighth overview of EU, national, policies

The EU Committee of the American chamber of commerce in Belgium has published its eighth annual guide to EU environmental affairs. The guide contains an overview of EU policy in several key areas of environmental activity and analyses national policies in each of the EU's 15 member states. It also presents individual environmental contacts in EU and national institutions, industry bodies and NGOs. Representing firms of American parentage operating in Europe, the organisation is an active lobbyist on EU environmental policy-making.

In a preface to the guide, the chair of the EU Committee's environment group, Frank Koelewijn, retracts a comparison made previously between EU environmental policy-making and Emmenthaler cheese, which comes from Switzerland - "You can work yourself through it from one end to the other without tasting the cheese," he had written. Mr Koelewijn said he would now like to apologise to the Swiss, who "do know what environmental control is all about" and "do know how to make a decent cheese".
