Euro ministers debate transport sustainability

Prague conference adopts strategy for sustainable development in European transport

European transport ministers meeting under the auspices of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development last week endorsed a strategy for sustainable development of transport. The 2000 meeting of the European conference of ministers of transport (ECMT), a 39-member intergovernmental organisation, also adopted a resolution on transport charges and taxes.

A series of reports underlie the sustainable transport policies strategy. They include studies on "smart" carbon dioxide reductions, quantifying CO2 abatement policies, vehicle emission trends, an assessment of transport benefits and a review of strategic environmental assessment of in the transport sector.
