Swedish mining waste dam breached

Officials say environment not threatened; EU taskforce reports on eastern Europe mining risk

Tailing ponds used to store mining waste at sites in Romania, Ukraine and Slovakia "pose a risk of leaking polluted waters," according to the report. Made up of officials from the Romanian and Hungarian governments, as well as the European Union and the United Nations, the task force also list a further 97 "lower risk" sites. The taskforce is to put out a more detailed report later this year with suggestions on how to improve environmental legislation in the member states and the EU. Follow Up:
