UK Labour Party promises on environment

Environment group welcomes opposition party s environment pledges

The director of Friends of the Earth (England, Wales and Northern Ireland), Charles Secrett, today welcomed a letter from the Labour party's environment spokesman Micheal Meacher in which he makes a host of guarantees to "boost energy conservation and renewables, public transport and rail freight, wildlife habitat protection, air and water quality, while reducing waste, carbon dioxide emissions, acid rain and ozone pollution." Mr Meacher also pledged to "empower every citizen with basic environmental rights". A general election is due in the UK by 1 May at the latest. Mr Secrett called on Mr Meacher to explain how Labour will deliver on these commitments and proposes a 10-point action plan.
