Austrian waterway support wins approval

The European Commission today approved a five-year, euros 5m subsidy scheme developed by the Austrian government to encourage road hauliers using the congested Danube corridor to shift to inland waterways. Beginning this year, the programme expects to shift 3% of road transport - equivalent to 2.5m tonnes of goods - to water by 2005. Hauliers will receive an "environmental premium" of between euros 12 and 27 per container transported by water, depending on size. See Commission press release.
