Finns issue Baltic eutrophication warning

Finland's environment institute has warned of continuing serious eutrophication in eastern parts of the Baltic Sea following a new survey. Tests in the Gulf of Finland showed a further drop in oxygen levels and no signs of life in some areas. "The lack of oxygen is as bad as in 1996," said institute director Lea Kauppi, warning that this could lead to widespread poisonous algal blooms next year, as happened in 1997 (EED 04/09/97). The Finnish government announced new anti-eutrophication measures earlier this year (EED 21/06/01). See press release.
