Retailers welcome EU gene food proposals

European retail trade lobby group Eurocommerce has warmly welcomed recent European Commission proposals to introduce strong traceability and labelling provisions for foods and other products derived from genetically modified crops. In a statement this week the group said it supported the plans, which were "balanced" and "reasonable". The release coincided with a presentation of the proposals in the European Parliament by consumer and environment commissioners David Byrne and Margot Wallström.
