EU air pollution deals approved

Internal market ministers set the final seal on two major EU air quality directives last week by formally approving compromise texts on national emission ceilings (NECs) and large combustion plants (LCPs). These had been hammered out with the European parliament through conciliation and were nodded through by MEPs the previous week (EED 20/09/01). The laws will now come into force after publication in the EU's official journal. Ministers also approved the council's first reading common position on the sixth environmental action programme (EED 08/06/01). See EU Council of Ministers and internal market council minutes.
