The European Commission has approved a six-year, euros 1.26bn (FFr8.4bn) French programme of aid to help cut nitrate pollution. Set to replace an earlier support package launched in 1993, the new one offers a 60% subsidy to livestock farmers who take anti-pollution measures, marginally less than the 65% rate proposed by the government. A main change from the previous system is a strong focus on supporting anti-pollution measures in areas most vulnerable to nitrate pollution rather than concentrating on larger holdings.
