Dutch environment minister Jan Pronk has been named as UN secretary general Kofi Annan's "special envoy" to help prepare the way for next year's Rio+10 sustainability summit in Johannesburg. The appointment marks a further growth in Mr Pronk's international green profile after he chaired the talks that led to eventual political agreement this summer on implementing the Kyoto climate protocol. Mr Pronk, who will continue in his role as national environment minister, was formerly a Dutch minister for international development. See press release.
