Scientists clear Dutch creosote request

Evidence provided by the Netherlands to support a national ban on industrial-strength creosote to protect ground and surface waters is sound, the EU scientific committee on toxicology, ecotoxicology and the environment (Cstee) has ruled. The opinion will allow the European Commission to uphold the ban, which would otherwise breach EU internal market rules. Earlier this year the committee supported an initial delay before any EU response to the Dutch request (EED 25/06/01). The ruling is academic, however, since EU creosote controls were strengthened last month (EED 26/10/01). See Cstee and its opinion.
