France debates risks from industrial sites

French environment minister Yves Cochet yesterday launched a month-long, national debate on risks from industrial installations. Plans for the initiative were first announced by prime minister Lionel Jospin in the wake of September's explosion at a Toulouse fertiliser factory, which killed 30 people (EED 24/09/01). Mr Cochet said a series of hearings in major cities would allow all actors to reconsider "our collective choices" regarding industrial risk management. A report on the debate's conclusions will be presented to Mr Jospin. See dedicated web pages.
